Floods cast their shadow on cattle price
Dhaka: The price of cattle in the city’s cattle markets may witness a rise on Friday, the last day before Eid ul Azha tomorrow, as their supply may be lower relative to demand in the makeshift cattle markets in Dhaka.
Majibur Rahman, president of Bangladesh Cattle Traders’ Association, said traders of the haats in the capital sold out a good number of cattle to the retailers of Noakhali, Brahmanbaria, Feni, Comilla and Sylhet districts at wholesale prices on Thursday.
Majubur also revealed cattle sellers purchased fewer of the sacrificial animals this year due to the extreme flood, warning of the possibility of a crisis caused by lack in the markets of the capital.
Buyers may have to pay Tk 5,000 to Tk 10,000 more on average in comparison with the price yesterday, Majibur said.
On the other hand, officer-in-charge of Motijheel Police Station Omar Faruk said there are enough cattle at the Kamalapur and Mugdha haats to meet demand.
The two markets are likely to witness a huge gathering after Jumma prayers, the OC added.
Our Goalanda and Tangail correspondents corroborated that inflow of cattle from the northern districts has been lower this year compared to Eid -ul-Azhas of the past.
On the other hand, few trucks, fully loaded with cows were seen heading towards Dhaka, reports our Sirajganj correspondent, quoting officer-in-charge of Hatikumrul Highway Police Station Abdul Quader Zilani.
