Torture on Rohingyas tantamount to genocide: NHRC
Dhaka: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque on Wednesday said the persecution of Rohingyas in Myanmar is tantamount to genocide.
‘It is extreme violation of human rights to persecute Rohingyas and force them to leave the homeland Myanmar,’ said the NHRC chief.
He also expressed grave concern over the incidents of killing, persecution, torture, setting fire on the homes of Rohingyas, reports UNB.
Kazi Reazul came up with the statement at a view exchange meeting with different human rights organisations and media men at the commission’s office in city’s Karwan Bazar.
NHRC chairman called upon the influential countries of the world to create immediate international pressure on Myanmar government to stop such kinds of barbarous acts.
Moreover, he also requested the international communities to extend their helping hands to the Rohingya victims.
The commission organised the view exchange meeting to fix the work policy over torture on Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state of Myanmar.
The representatives of various human rights organisations including Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), UNICEF, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, World Vision, Bangladesh, Jatiya Mohila Ainjibi Samity, Save the Children were present at the meeting.
Kazi Reazul Hoque said Myanmar is liable to protect the human rights of Rohingyas. It is their responsibilities. The authorities of Myanmar must stop the Rohinyga killings.
He said the NHRC and other human rights organisations will stage protest programme over persecution of Rohingyas.
The NHRC boss said the officials of the commission will go to Cox’s Bazar on September 9 and Ukhia on September 10 for monitoring the latest situation of Rohingya refugees.
Later, the situation will be briefed at a press conferenece.
Moreover, High Commissioner of United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will be informed the overall situation by sending letters to them.
Md Nazrul Islam, Enamul Haque Chowdhury, Nurunnahar Osmani, Banchita Chakma, the members of the commission, among others, spoke at the meeting.
