Dhaka: A joint meeting of BNP will be held in Dhaka today to discuss the country’s latest political situation and municipal polls, and work out programmes to register its protest against the 5 January general election.

The meeting will be held at BNP's Nayapaltan central office at 11:00am, said a party press release on Friday.

BNP joint secretaries general, organising secretaries, secretaries, and presidents and secretaries of the party’s associate bodies will join the meeting.

After the meeting, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will brief the media about its outcome.

A party leader wishing anonymity said the meeting will work out programmes to observe 5 January as Democracy Killing Day registering the party’s protest against 10th parliamentary elections held on that day in 2014.

The leader said their party has a plan to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on 5 January to mark the day.

He said they have already sought permission from Dhaka Metropolitan Police for the programme.

The BNP leader said they will announce countrywide demonstrations on the day if they are not permitted to hold the rally in the city.

BNP had also tried to hold a rally with black flags in front of its Nayapaltan central office on January 5 to observe the day as ‘Democracy Killing Day’ last year unlike Awami League that showcases it as ‘Democracy Saving Day’.

However, the party could not hold the programme as the government reportedly besieged its chief Khaleda at her Gulshan office on 3 January and locked BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.

Having failed to come out of her office on 5 January, Khaleda declared a countrywide transport blockade demanding a fresh election. The programme continued for 92 days amid widespread violence, including petrol bomb attacks, killing over a hundred people.
