Dhaka: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has received its own armed unit to gear up its drives across Bangladesh, aiming to check the social menace.

A total of 20 members of Bangladesh Police joined the commission's armed unit at the ACC head office at 11:00am on Thursday, ACC spokesman Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told news agency UNB.

Talking to reporters, ACC director general (admin) Munir Chowdhury said a new dimension has been added to the ongoing anti-corruption activities of the ACC on Thursday.

He said the armed unit members will help the ACC officials involved in anti-corruption drives to arrest graft suspects, collect evidence of graft, produce accused before court and ensure overall security of investigation officers as well.

Munir Chowdhury said the commission has intensified its anti-corruption drives so that no graft suspect can escape.

He hoped that the commission can now act as FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation, the USA) and CBI (Criminal Bureau of Investigation, India) in conducting its activities.

Replying to a question, the ACC director general said the armed unit members will not take part in any investigation or inquiry of the ACC, they will take part only in its anti-corruption drives.
