Govt fails to raise strong voice over Rohingya crisis: Mosharraf

Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Friday alleged that the government cannot raise its voice strongly over the Rohingya issue as it was not elected by people.

"The Bangladesh government can't register its protest with a loud voice against the killing of Rohingyas and persecution on them by our neighbouring country Myanmar as it's not elected by people," he said.

The BNP leader came up with the comments while speaking at a discussion arranged by BNP's Dhaka South city unit at National Press Club, marking the 10th 'jail release' day of BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman.

Posing a question, he said, "Why couldn't the government force Myanmar to stop the killing of Rohingyas through diplomatic efforts or any other means?"

Rohingya people are now frantically trying to enter Bangladesh in the face of crackdown by Myanmar's security forces as Rohingya insurgents reportedly attacked dozens of police posts and an army bases there. The ensuing violence and the security forces' onslaughts have killed over 1000 people and triggered the exodus of villagers to Bangladesh.

Many of the fleeing Rohingyas have already entered the country through different border points.

Mosharraf, a BNP standing committee member, said Myanmar security forces are seriously violating the human rights by carrying out brutal drive against Rohingyas in the name of a war against terrorism.

He alleged that the Myanmar authorities are carrying out the drive in a planned way to eliminate minority group Rohingya from their country.

The BNP leader said the current Bangladesh government has failed to take any step to stop the genocide in Myanmar as it could not read public mind. "The country's people want the repression and mass killing of Rohingyas in Myanmar to be stopped immediately."

He said though the entire world is protesting the Rohingya carnage, the government could not do it as it has lost ground beneath its feet.

Mosharraf called upon the government to give shelter to Rohingyas for a temporary period and make strong diplomatic efforts so that the Myanmar authorities take them back.
