Chittagong: India has sent 53 tonnes emergency relief supplies for the Rohingya people who have taken shelter in Bangladesh fleeing atrocities unleashed on them by the Myanmar security forces in Rakhine State.

An Indian Air Force flight with the relief materials reached Shah Amanat International Airport around 1:30pm.

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader received the aid from Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla.

Shringla said India will send a total of 7,000 tonnes of relief materials for the Rohingya refugees and 53 tonnes were delivered today and the rest will come through ships and aircraft.

The relief materials include rice, lentils, salt, biscuits, powdered milk, nodules, soaps and mosquito nets.

Each Rohingya will get a 15-kg packet, the Indian envoy said.

Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Abdul Mannan who was also present there said the relief items will soon be sent to the Rohingya camps in Teknaf and Ukhia of Cox’s Bazar, and Bandarban.

Meanwhile, two more cargo flights with relief supplies from Indonesia are scheduled to land at the Chittagong airport at about 7:00pm, said Additional District Magistrate Habibur Rahman.

‘And Friday, two more flights carrying aid from Indonesia and one from India will reach the port city,’ he added.

Meanwhile, three Rohingyas, including an elderly man, who sustained several bullet wounds reportedly during violence in Myanmar were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
