UK to stand by Bangladesh on Rohingya issue

United Kingdom’s Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Bangladesh Rushanara Ali, MP, on Monday said her country will stand beside Bangladesh over Rohingya crisis.
‘Our government and people of UK apply pressure on the Myanmar authority to end the terrible treatment on Rohingya and human right violation what is described by the United Nations as ethnic cleansing,’ she said, reports the BSS.
The UK Member of Parliament made the statement during a meeting with commerce minister Tofail Ahmed at his secretariat office. She is visiting Bangladesh leading a high-level British business delegation.
She said Bangladesh is facing great challenges along the Myanmar border as refuge inflow has increased to a total of 900,000 people, including 450,000 people displaced previously.
‘We are in UK doing everything we can to ensure that international community takes tougher action against the Burmese military,’ added Rushanara.
She expressed her gratitude to the people of Bangladesh for their generosity to the people who have lost everything including family members.
The trade envoy also thanked the government to allow the agencies for providing aid and support to the Rohingyas.
‘Our ambassador is working with other ambassadors here to make sure the proper coordination to support humanitarian system from other government as well,’ she added.
Rushanara also said: ‘We look for continuing to work together to bring an end to the violence, and establish peace and stability.’
British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Alison Blake, commerce secretary Shubhashish Bose and member of British delegation were present.
The commerce minister urged the British investors to come up with investment in Bangladesh as foreign investment in the country is fully protected by the Act of Parliament.
He said Bangladesh with the cooperation of the international community wants permanent solution to the Rohingya crisis through discussion.
‘We’ve a limitation of land that is why we can’t allow them (Rohingya) to stay in our country for long,’ added Tofail.
The commerce minister sought the intervention of international community for returning the Rohingyas back to their country.
