Dhaka: BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia is going to sit with her party’s senior leaders on Monday night to work out the party’s line of action under the emerging situation over its 5-January rally, reports local news agency.

The meeting is scheduled to be held at about 8:30pm at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office, said her media wing member Sayrul Kabir Khan.

He said party standing committee members, vice chairmen, chairperson’s advisers and joint secretaries general are expected to join the meeting.

The party leaders allege that the ruling party is trying to push BNP to fall into its trap by announcing tougher street programme as it did last year.

A senior leader close to Khaleda said if the government finally does not allow the party to hold any rally in the city, BNP is likely to announce any peaceful programme across the country for Tuesday to avoid any confrontation.

Besides, BNP chief or senior leaders may hold a press conference in the city the same day to register their protest against the 5-January general election.

BNP had also tried to hold a rally with black flags in front of its Nayapaltan central office on 5-January  to observe the day as ‘Democracy Killing Day’ last year unlike Awami League that showcases it as ‘Democracy Saving Day’.

However, the party could not hold the programme as the government reportedly besieged its chief Khaleda at her Gulshan office on  3 January and locked BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.

Having failed to come out of her office on 5 January, Khaleda declared a countrywide transport blockade demanding a fresh election. The programme continued for 92 days amid widespread violence, including petrol bomb attacks, killing over a hundred people.

Besides, most BNP senior leaders were implicated in many violence cases while many of them were arrested and thousands others went into hiding.
