Three JMB men get 14 yrs imprisonment

Chittagong: A Chittagong court on Tuesday sentenced three members of banned militant outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to 14 years imprisonment each in two separate cases filed in connection with hurling bombs at the court rooms in the port city in 2005.

The convicts are-Javed Iqbal alias Mohammad, the then commander of JMB Ctg region, Mizanur Rahman alias Zahidur Rahman and Shahadat Ali alias Masum Billah. Of them, Mizanur Rahman was tried in absentia.

According to the prosecution, two bombs were thrown at the court rooms of Joint District and Session Judge Syed Dilzar Hossain and Metropolitan Magistrate Akram Hossain on October 3, 2005. But the bombs remained unexploded.

Police arrested Shahadat while trying to flee the spot after hurling the bombs.

Police filed two separate cases---one under the Explosive Substances Act and another under Anti -Terrorism Act---on the same day.

Chittagong Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Shahadat Hossain Bhuiya handed down the verdict.
