Dhaka: Japan on Wednesday assured Bangladesh of its support to address the issue of Rohingya.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam made the disclosure in a Tweet message after a breakfast meeting with visiting Japanese Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Iwao Horii.

Horii also praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her government, added the junior minister.

The breakfast meeting was held at a state guesthouse in the city in the morning.

Earlier in the day, Iwao Horii, who visited Myanmar on September 21-23, arrived in Dhaka to discuss Rohingya issue with his Bangladesh counterpart.

The visit is a follow-up to the bilateral meeting of Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono on the sidelines of the UNGA on September 18.

Meanwhile, the Japanese government has decided to extend emergency grant aid of US$ 4 million through agencies, including international organisations, for the people in Myanmar and Bangladesh affected by the attacks carried out against the security forces on August 25 and subsequent destabilisation of the situation in the northern part of Rakhine State.

This aid is to provide humanitarian assistance such as provision of water, sanitary and non-food items in Myanmar and provision of shelters, non-food items, water, sanitary and child protection in Bangladesh, said the Japanese Foreign Ministry.
