Govt fails to convince Russian, China over Rohingya issue: BNP

Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Friday alleged that the government has failed to convince the United Nations Security Council's permanent members Russian and China to help Bangladesh resolve Rohingya crisis.

Speaking at a press conference at the party's central office in Dhaka’s Nayapaltan, BNP senior joint secretary general Rahul Kabir Rizvi also alleged that the UN Security Council's discussion on Rohingya issue ended without any decision due to the government's diplomatic failure.

"The open debate at the UN Security Council on Rohingya crisis concluded without any specific decision or resolution. Even, the UN yesterday (Thursday) voiced doubt whether Myanmar would take back Rohingyas. The main reason behind the any positive step to resolve Rohingya crisis is the government's absolute diplomatic failure," he said.

The BNP leader also alleged that though the entire world is vocal over Rohingya issue, Bangladesh government is still playing a subservient role in this regard.

"The Foreign Ministry was silent at the initial stage. Had the government intensified its diplomatic efforts from the initial stage to raise the issue at the Security Council, more international support would have found to solve the crisis," he observed.

Rizvi said the government has also failed to bring the influential neighbouring countries to its side.

"China and Russia are our very friendly countries while our ties with India is very deep, but the government could not convince them through talks. The Rohingya crisis turned critical due to the government's failure. The government has failed entirely to deal with the issue properly."

Rizvi said the Myanmar security forces would have forced to stop its drive against Rohingyas had the government carried out active diplomatic efforts to do it since the very beginning of the problem.
