Govt going to remove CJ through tricks: BNP

Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Tuesday alleged that the government is going to remove Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha from his post resorting to 'tricks'.

"People have clearly understood from what appeared in the media about the Chief Justice's leave. You (govt) are, in fact, removing him from his office by resorting to tricks," said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Speaking at a discussion, he also said the government has taken the move against Sinha as he spoke the truth and talked in favour of establishing the rule of law and people's rights.

Shaheed Jihad Smrity Parishad arranged the programme at National Press Club, marking the 27th anniversary of martyrdom of Nazir Uddin Ahmed Jihad.

Jihad, a JCD activist of Ullapara upazila in Sirajganj, was shot to death in Dhaka on 10 October 1990 during the anti-Ershad movement.

Fakhrul said the nation is passing through the worst ever time now as the current government is destroying its all achievements and institutions like 'hyena'.

"The government's latest attack is on Judiciary, which a place people could go there for getting justice against the misdeeds and unjust acts of the government and its different agencies. But we've lost it now. They (govt) have completed all the necessary things to ruin the apex court getting angry at the Appellate Division's 16th amendment verdict," he alleged.

The BNP leader said the government's main motive is to reestablish 'one-party Baksal rule' in a different style by snatching people's all rights only to cement its power.

About the next general election, he said the government does not want to hold a credible lection as it knows it will not be able to return to power if people can exercise their right to franchise under a neutral administration.

The BNP leader said the government wants to score in an empty field by resorting to ploy and dangerous evil designs.

As a political party, Fakhrul said it is BNP's duty to make people aware so that they can establish a pro-people government through credible polls defeating the government 'perilous blueprints'.
