Dhaka: Director General of International Organisation for Migration (IOM) William Lacy Swing will arrive in Dhaka on Sunday afternoon to see Rohingya situations on the ground.

The UN Migration Agency chief is expected to arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 5:20pm, said an official.

As part of his visit he will visit the makeshift settlements of Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar on Monday to observe the crisis on the ground.

He will also meet concerned diplomats, donor representatives, ambassadors, ministers, bureaucrats and UNCT members.

His four-day visit in Bangladesh aims to demonstrate the enormity of the humanitarian needs of Rohingyas and the UN response to it with a strong IOM leadership through the ISCG in collaboration with the government, development and humanitarian actors, and local communities to address the urgent needs of greater humanitarian support, IOM officials said.

His visit also intends to mobilise the urgently needed resources to provide life-saving humanitarian assistance and protection to refugees in Bangladesh and its host communities, including proper registration, as set out in the Response Plan.

He is expected to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, among others, during the visit.

Rohingyas from Myanmar’s Rakhine State continue to crossing border to seek safety in Bangladesh putting the number of new arrivals at 536,000, according to latest data.

Their arduous journeys from Rakhine villages to the border with Bangladesh took from 2-16 days, and that most Rohingya people were forced to pay between Tk 5,000 and Tk10,000 each to cross the Naf River by boat, according to a UN report.
