Dhaka: Krishak Shramik Janata League (KSJL) President Abdul Kader Siddiqui Bir Uttam on Monday demanded resignation of Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda for praising BNP founder Ziaur Rahman.

‘The CEC can’t say that Ziaur Rahman restored multiparty democracy in the country. Zia restored democracy means some one had killed democracy,’ Kader Siddiqui told reporters at the city’s Nirbachan Bhaban, reports the UNB.

A KSJL delegation, led by its president Bangabir Kader Siddiqui, went there to place his party’s 18-point proposal at the Election Commission’s dialogue.

After a meeting that lasted two and half an hour with CEC KM Nurul Huda in the chair, Kader Siddiqui told reporters that they boycotted the dialogue protesting the CEC’s remarks.

‘We don’t agree with CEC’s speech. This is why, we boycotted the dialogue. We demand his resignation,’ he said.

At the dialogue with BNP on Saturday last, KM Nurul Huda lauded BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and BNP governments. The CEC said Ziaur Rahman had ruled the country for four years and the multiparty democracy was restored during his tenure.

According to its written proposal, KSJL wants formation of an election-time non-party neutral government and deployment of the army at least 15 days ahead of the parliamentary polls.

The party said the election-time non-party neutral government system or anything else will have to be kept up until the Election Commission (EC) becomes ‘independent’ and free from government influence. Now, it can’t expect any fair election under the political government.

It also wants dissolution of the existing parliament which came as a result of the January-5 ‘flawed’ election.

KSJL proposals also include delimitation of parliamentary constituencies considering voter size and administrative conveniences, relaxing registration rules for new political parties, reducing influence of money in election, scraping the provision for independent candidates to collect signatures of one percent voter to contest the polls and appointment of returning officers from the EC’s own staff.
