Policeman closed for ‘torturing’ bank official
Dhaka: Mohammadpur police sub-inspector (SI) was closed for allegedly torturing Bangladesh Bank official Golam Rabby as the bank official refused to pay bribe.
The SI, Masud Shikder, has also been withdrawn from the police station, said Mohammadpur zone assistant police commissioner Mohammad Hafiz Al Faruque on Monday.
Earlier, on 9 January, a petrol team of Mohammadpur police picked up Rabby from the area and tortured him after he had refused to pay bribe. The police also reportedly threatened him with death in cross-fire.
However, the Mohammadpur police denied the allegations brought against the SI.
Some police constables halted Golam Rabbi, an assistant director of Bangladesh Bank, while he was returning to his Kalyanpur residence after loading cash from an ATM booth at Taj Mahal Road at about 11:00pm on Saturday. The constables dragged him into a police-van parked nearby.
In the van SI Masud asked Rabby to pay Tk 5lakh and also threaten to kill him by crossfire as he refused to pay the ransom.
Golam Rabby’s friend Jahid told NTV Online that Rabby called him at about 12:06am and asked him to come at Asadgate, Mohammadpur.
Later Jahid along with some people went to Asadgate and found Rabby sitting inside a petrol police-van.
Later, the policemen released Rabby after his fellows reached on the spot.
Rabby filed a complaint with the Mohammadpur police on 10 January morning.
Jahid said, Rabby also filed a written complaint to the Mohammadpur zone deputy commissioner.
The police officials assured him that they would take necessary actions against the accused police officers, said Jahid.
The Mohammadpur police officer-in-charge Jamal Uddin Mir said the petrol police searched Rabby as he came out from the Jeneva camp area, which is a listed drug zone, at about 12:00midnight.
He said Rabby refused to cooperate the police as they came to check him, but later the policemen handed him over to his friends.
