Arrest warrant for Tarique Rahman in sedition case

Dhaka: A Dhaka court on Monday issued an arrest warrant for of BNP Senior Vice-chairman Tarique Rahman and two others in sedition case filed with the Tejgaon police.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions’ Court Judge Kamrul Hossain Mollah issued the warrant in the morning.

State Prosecutor Tapash Kumar Paul told NTV Online two other accused are journalist Mahathir Faruqui Khan, former chief reporter of Ekushey Television (ETV) and Kanak Sarwar, former special correspondent of the private TV channel.

He said according to schedule court considered the charge sheet of the case and issued arrest warrant against Tarique Rahman and two others.

Earlier, the case’s investigating officer police’s detective branch (DB) Inspector Emdad Hossain lodged the charge sheet to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Megistrate’s (CMM) Court against Tarique Rahman and three others.

The accused in the case are, former ETV chairman Abdus Salam, Mahathir Faruqui Khan and Kanak Sarwar.

Among the accused, ETV’s former Chairman Abdus Salam is now at jail.

On 8 January 2015, the treason case was filed with Tejgaon police station over the live telecast of a provocative speech by Tarique at a programme in London on 5 January.

According to the case statement, Tarique instigated his party men by delivering ‘provocative’ speech against law enforcers which led to anarchy in the country at that time.

Salam committed the same offence by broadcasting Tarique’s ‘provocative’ speech, which also posed a threat to the sovereignty of Bangladesh.

Salam, who was arrested on 6 January, in a statement before a magistrate confessed to sedition charges brought against him.

Tarique has been in London since 11 September 2008 on medical grounds after securing parole in various cases.
