BNP accuses govt of failing to convince Russia, China
Dhaka: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday claimed that the government has failed to convince Russia and Chain for coming forward to resolve the Rohingya crisis as it has been playing a ‘subservient’ role over the issue.
‘The Rohingya problem is now a major crisis for us. The government has been playing completely a submissive role in this regard. They (govt) in no way can say they have taken timely and proper steps in dealing with it,’ he said.
Speaking at a discussion, the BNP leader further said, ‘They (govt) still couldn’t convince the UN and many influential countries. That’s why Russia and China are against us. India is also supporting Myanmar.’
Labour Party, one of the components of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, organised the programme at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), marking its 40th founding anniversary.
Mentioning that the country now lacks democracy, Fakhrul said Bangladesh has already turned into a ‘failed’ state. ‘As the state organisations have been destroyed, it’s like delusion to expect fairness here. But BNP is a liberal democratic party. BNP always works for democracy. We also believe a country can’t properly prosper without democracy.’
He called upon all to get united to ‘restore’ democracy and people’s all rights. ‘We must get united to reach our goal. We don’t want any division as we think we’ll be successful in restoring democracy if we can forge a unity.’
The BNP leader said their party has been on a movement for democracy for the last nine years and scarified a lot. ‘Several thousands BNP leaders and activists were killed and many others, including Ilias Ali, were made disappeared... we’re still carrying out struggle.’
Fakhrul said they are working to unite people to ensure the fall of the current ‘repressive and autocratic’ government.
He said people are now leading a miserable life due to the unusual price hike of daily essentials and utility services.
Former Dhaka University Vice-chancellor Prof Emajuddin Ahmed and Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman, among others, spoke at programme held with Labour Party chairman Mostafizur Rahman Iran in the chair.
