Law Minster thinks himself more than CJ: BNP

Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Sunday said the recent activities of Law Minister Anisul Huq indicate that he thinks himself as the 'country's chief justice or more than that'.

"It's surprising that the Law Minister is going to sit with the Appellate Division which is the most dignified part of the judiciary. The law minster is just part of the executive branch. It's now a much-talked-about issue whether the law minister is considering himself as the chief justice," he said.

Speaking at a press briefing at BNP's Nayapaltan central office, the BNP leader further said, "The way the Chief Justice has been sent on forced leave and his (Huq) recent activities demonstrate that he himself considers as the chief justice or more than that."

He said there will be a big question in public mind if the law minister holds any meeting with the Appellate Division over publishing a gazette notification on the disciplinary and conduct rules for lower court judges.

Rizvi said Anisul Huq must be held accountable to people someday for his current activities.

About their party's plan for holding a rally in the city on November 8, the BNP leader said they are hopeful that the government will give them permission for it.

As the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) conference is being held at the parliament's south plaza, Rizvi said their party chairperson Khaleda Zia along with party leaders and workers will place wreaths and offer fateha at the mazaar of its founder Ziaur Rahman on November 7, marking what they said the 'National Revolution and Solidarity Day'.

He hoped that the government will not obstruct them from going to Zia's mazar in the parliament area showing the excuse of the CPA conference.
