3 owners of Apan Jewellers sent to jail

Dhaka: A court here on Monday sent the three owners of Apan Jewellers to jail on expiry of their one-day remand in three separate cases.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sadir Yeasir Ahsan Chowdhury passed the order following an appeal filed by the investigative officer of the case.

Earlier in the day, the investigative officers appealed for keeping the owners’- Dildar Ahmed Selim, Gulzar Ahmed and Azad Ahmed - in jail until the end of the investigation of the cases.

Earlier on November 2, the trio were put on a one-day remand each.

On October 24, Dildar surrendered before the court and sought bail in the three cases filed under the Money Laundering Prevention Act and for accumulating illegal wealth.

Gulzar and Azad also surrendered and sought bail in two case filed with Gulshan police station.

After eharing Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate sent them to jail rejecting their bail petitions.

On August 12, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) filed five cases against the three owners of Apan Jewellers after 15 maunds of illegal gold and some diamond jewellery were recovered from its branches.

Five CIID assistant revenue officers filed the cases with Gulshan Police Station, Dhanmondi Police Station, Ramna Police Station and Uttara Police Station following directives of the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

Apan Jewellers hit the limelight after the rape of two private university girls by Shafat Ahmed, son of Dildar Ahmed, and his cohort in a Banani hotel came to the fore.

One of the rape victims filed a case with Banani Police Station on May 6 last accusing five people, including Shafat.
