Dhaka: BNP has not been given permission for visiting its founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban area on Tuesday on the occasion of the ‘national revolution and solidarity day’ due to the ongoing 63rd conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA).

Talking to reporters at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office on Monday night, party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, ‘We’re yet to get permission to go to our founder’s grave. Section 144 has been imposed in the areas and it’ll remain enforce until 11pm on Wednesday.’

He said now it is uncertain whether they can go to Zia’s grave or not.

Fakhrul, however, said they will definitely observe the programme when the 144 will be lifted.

He said they are trying to get permission to send at least a small delegation there on the occasion.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia together with party leaders and activists was scheduled to place wreaths at Zia’s grave at 10am on Tuesday, marking the ‘civil-military uprising’ on November 7, 1975.

The party also deferred its Wednesday’s rally at Suhrawardy Udyan to Saturday due to the ongoing 63rd CPA conference.

It has now sought permission for staging the programme on November 11 instead of November 8, said party senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Monday.

On this day in 1975, amid political turmoil, soldiers and civilians jointly freed then chief of army staff Ziaur Rahman from captivity in Dhaka cantonment, paving the way for Zia to come to power.

BNP has chalked out a 10-day programme to observe the day in a befitting manner. Some other political parties and different socio-cultural organisations will also observe the day from different perspectives.
