Dhaka: Law Minister Anisul Huq on Saturday said acting Chief Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah will continue the duty of Chief Justice until the President appoints a new one as per article 95 of the Constitution.

The minister came up with the information while talking to news agency UNB over phone.

Amid various speculations and row over the Supreme Court's 16th amendment verdict, Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, now abroad, has stepped down.

President Abdul Hamid received his resignation letter, said his press secretary Joynal Abedin on Saturday.

Shrugging off BNP's allegation that SK Sinha was forced to resign, Anisul said the Chief Justice has sent the resignation letter from a foreign country. Mentioning the BNP's claim that CJ Sinha was forced to resign, Anisul said "These are irrelevant and illogical statements. They (BNP) are trying to spoil water."

He further said, "Sinha has sent the resignation letter from a foreign country. We didn't send any peacekeeping force to that country. So, how did we force him to step down?"

Asked whether any action will be taken against SK Sinha, Anisul said "Nobody is above the law."
