Dhaka: The High Court on Sunday discharged the rule issued asking the government why Tangail’s Awami League lawmaker Amanur Rahman Khan Rana should not be granted bail in freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed murder case.

The HC bench Justice Borhanuddin and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal gave the judgment and asked the authorities concerned to dispose the case within six months.

Deputy Attorney General Najibur Rahman said the court discharged the rule issued asking the government why MP Rana should not be granted bail. That means the bail petition of MP Rana has been rejected.

Earlier on Thursday, the same HC bench set Sunday for delivering the judgment after concluding hearing on the rule.

October 19, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld its previous order staying the bail to ruling Awami League lawmaker from Tangail-3 constituency Amanur Rahman Khan Rana, granted by the High Court in Faruk Ahmed murder case.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division led by acting Chief Justice Abdul Wahhab Miah asked the authorities concerned to dispose of the rule issued by the High Court within December 14 during a hearing on leave-to-appeal petition against the bail.

On April 13, an HC bench granted bail to MP Rana in the case. The HC also issued a rule asked the government to explain as to why MP Rana should not be granted bail.

However, a Chamber Justice of the SC, on April 18, stayed the High Court order till May 8.

On May 8, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court extended its stay for four months on a High Court order granting bail to Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in the case.

On June 8, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld the stay order of its previous order.

Faruk Ahmed, a senior AL leader and a freedom fighter, was shot dead in the district town of Tangail on January 18, 2013.

Rana is a charge-sheeted accused in the case.

When Rana appeared before Tangail Additional District and Session’s Judge Court ending his 22-month fugitive run on September 18 last, the court sent him to jail.

In February 2016, detectives pressed charges against 14 people, including the ruling party MP and his three brothers, in the Faruk murder case.
