Dhaka: The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked authorities of Islamic University to uphold the studentship of 88 deprived students who got enrolled under F unit admission test.

A five-member Appellate Division bench, led by acting Chief Justice Abdul Wahhab Miah upheld the High Court order by majority view.

Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal stood for the petitioners while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state.

The HC on April 17 asked the authorities of Islamic University to sustain the studentship of 88 deprived students who got enrolled in Mathematics and Statistics departments, Ruhul Quddus said, adding that the Appellate Division on Wednesday upheld the HC order by majority view.

On March 13, the High Court stayed for two months the decision of Islamic University (IU) cancelling its ‘F’ unit admission test following ‘question paper leakage’ after hearing a petition filed by 88 aggrieved students.

The High Court issued a rule asking the university authorities to explain within two weeks why its decision of cancelling the admission of 88 students would not be declared illegal.

The IU syndicate on March 6 cancelled the ‘F’ unit admission test under its Applied Science and Technology Faculty and decided to hold it again on March 16.

However, around 100 students got enrolled in Mathematics and Statistics departments under the faculty before the admission test was cancelled, he said, adding that the fate of the students who have already got enrolled will be known in the final order.

The written admission test of ‘F’ unit was held on December 7 last.

The university authorities formed a probe body following an allegation of the question paper leakage of the test.

On March 6, the IU authorities cancelled the ‘F’ unit admission test and also suspended a teacher and two officers, and expelled a student over question paper leakage.
