Chandpur: Police on Monday arrested four people for trying to rape a woman inside the cabin of a moving ferry heading towards Madaripur from Dhaka.

According to the victim, she along with her boyfriend boarded the launch, ‘MV Parabat-14’, from Dhaka at bout 8:00am on Sunday.

As the launch reached Mohanpur in Chandpur Sadar upazila, four youths identifying them as law enforcers asked them to open their cabin door.

Later, the thugs stormed into the cabin, confined the victim’s companion to another cabin and tried to violate her.

Hearing her screams, other passengers rescued her and caught the thugs.

The culprits were handed over to police after the vessel reached the Chandpur terminal.

Police also recovered two bullets, some liquor and hemp from the cabin of the four youths–Sujon, 25, Imran, 25, Sabbir, 20, and Rajab, 26.

Two cases were filed with Chandpur Model Police Station -- one for rape attempt and another for possessing bullets.

Family members said the woman, hailing from Shibchar in Madaripur, was married off to a man, Omar Faruque, two years back, but she went to Dhaka to her boyfriend leaving her husband.

They were returning to Madaripur with a plan to marry, said police.
