Dhaka: BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday alleged that their party founder Ziaur Rahman has been ‘misinterpreted’ in textbooks.

‘Ziaur Rahman has badly been misinterpreted in the textbooks kids are reading. Ziaur Rahman has been described as a killer in the books, but the reality is quite different,’ he said.

The BNP leader came up with the allegation at a discussion arranged by Ziaur Rahman Foundation at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity, marking the BNP founder’s 80th birth anniversary, reports UNB.

Fakhrul urged his party men to take the responsibility of properly projecting Zia, his thoughts, ideals and activities before the nation to counter the propaganda against him.

‘There’s no reason to get upset under the current situation of the country. Zia was a big politician. Honesty was his best virtue. We’ve to move forward following his this virtue and create a new vista of politics for the welfare of people,’ he said pointing at BNP men.

Earlier talking to reporters after placing wreaths at Zia’s grave along with party chief Khaleda Zia, Fakhrul said resorting democracy and people’s rights is the main challenge now for their party.

‘Now democracy is deported and Bangladesh is at stake. We’re working to organise people to overcome this situation. We all have to be united for restoring democracy and people’s rights,’ he said.

Fakhrul said they have taken a vow at Zia’s grave that they will work for freedom of people and the welfare of the country and its people following Zia’s ideals.

BNP leader Abdullah Al Noman alleged that the ruling party leaders are making various remarks about relocating Zia’s grave to another place from parliament area as part of their evil tactics. ‘We’re not giving importance to this matter. It’s part of government’s evil design.’

He urged the government to concentrate in resolving the political problem refraining from making remarks about relocation of Zia’s grave.
