HC delivers split verdict over killing of 3 law enforcers
Dhaka: The High Court on Tuesday delivered dissenting verdicts in connection with a case filed for killing three law enforcers in the Sundarbans in 2006.
While the presiding judge of the two-member HC bench Justice Nizamul Haque acquitted all the 13 convicts, junior judge Justice M Farque handed down life imprisonment to them after hearing death references and appeals in the case, reports UNB.
Talking to reporters, deputy attorney general M Moniruzzaman Rubel said now the case file will be sent to the Chief Justice who will form a third bench for its disposal.
On 19 August 2014, a Bagerhat court sentenced six forest robbers to death and seven others to life imprisonment for killing three law enforcers in the Sundarbans in 2006.
The condemned convicts–Rafiqul Sheikh, Kuddus Sheikh, Idris Sheikh, Babul Sheikh, Alkas Sheikh and Ilias Sheikh–hail from Khalkuria village in Morelganj upazila of the district.
The seven lifers were identified as Reazul Sheikh, Akram Sheikh, Alam Sheikh, Badshah Sheikh, Jamal Sheikh, Kamal Sheikh and Aslam Sheikh.
They hail from Gabgasia village in Morelganj upazila and Hogoldanga in Batiaghata upazila of Khulna district.
A joint team of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and Bangladesh Coast Guard members of Mongla (West zone), launched a drive on 1 December, 2006 in the Sundarbans near the Pashur River of Mongla upazila to arrest the forest robbers while preparing to commit robberies in the area.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the forest robbers attacked them. At one stage of the fierce attack, some members of the joint forces fell into the river.
The bodies of three law enforcers–two coastguards MH Kabir and MA Islam, and RAB member M Kanchan–were recovered from the river, a day after the incident.
Deputy additional director of RAB-6 Mohsin Ali filed a case against some unidentified people in this connection.
