Dhaka: Mahfuz, the prime accused in the sensational five-murder case in Narayanganj, on Thursday reportedly confessed his involvement with the murders before a court in Narayanganj on Thursday.

Judicial Magistrate Sayeduzzaman Sharif recorded the statement of Mahfuz under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPc).

In his statement, accused Mahfuz, a nephew of the complainant of the murder case Shafiqul Islam, told the court that he along with his associates killed the five members of the family.

He said he planned to take revenge on his slain aunt Lamia as she had refused his proposal for developing an illicit relationship.

However, Narayanganj superintendent of police (SP) Khandaker Mahid Uddin in a press conference said Mahfuz is the brain behind killing five members of a family at Baburile in Narayanganj.

On 16 January, five members of the family were killed by miscreants at Baburail.

The deceased are Taslima Begum, wife of Shafiqul Islam, a private car driver in Dhaka, their children Sumaiya, 5, Shantu, 10, Taslima’s brother Morshedul, , and Lamia, who was married to Shafiqul’s brother Sharif.

Shafiqul Islam, husband of deceased Taslima Begum, filed the case against unidentified miscreants with Narayanganj Sadar Police Station on Sunday morning.

Members of the Criminal Investigation Department also collected evidence from the spot.

On 17 January, police arrested Mahfuz, nephew of Shafiqul Islam, and showed him arrested in the case.

A Narayanganj court on 18 January granted seven-day police custody for Mahfuz in the murder case when officer-in-charge of DB Mamunur Rashid Mondal, also investigation officer of the case, produced Mahfuz before the court seeking 10-day custody for questioning.

On the same day, the DB was entrusted with investigating the case.
