HC stays Kalyanpur slum eviction drive
Dhaka: The High Court on Thursday stayed for three months the eviction drive at a slum at Kalayanpur in the city which faced protests from slum dwellers in the morning.
The court also ordered the authorities concerned not to evict or harass the slum dwellers ‘without following proper legal procedure’.
An HC bench comprising Justice Tariq Ul Hakim and Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty passed the order following a petition filed by rights organisation Ain O Shalish Kendra (ASK). Dr Kamal Hossain stood for the petitioner.
Earlier, slum dwellers clashed with police when a team of National Housing Authority went to their slum at Kalyanpur along with police and magistrate Nure Alam to conduct an eviction drive there at about 11:00am.
When the team reached there, the slum dwellers obstructed them by throwing brickbats, leading to a clash.
However, police brought the situation under control around 11:45 am by charging baton and firing rubber bullets.
