Dhaka: The International Human Rights Day is being observed in the country on Sunday as elsewhere across the globe.

Various rights groups have chalked out elaborate programmes, including discussion, rally and human chain, to mark the day.

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is set to bring out a rally on this day from Manik Mia Avenue (Khamar Bari) marking the day.

The commission will organise a two-day seminar at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the city on the occasion.

The UN General Assembly proclaimed December 10 as Human Rights Day in 1950 with a view to bringing to the attention 'of the peoples of the world' the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as the common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations.

President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia issued separate messages on the occasion.

In his message, the President said the government is working relentlessly to protect human rights apart from poverty alleviation and other development activities.

Bangladesh made an exemplary example of protecting human right to give the shelter to the Rohingyas who have fled their country following persecution carried out by their army.

‘I hope various individuals and organisations will come forward to protect human rights, specially the right of children and women,’ the President added.

The Prime Minister, in her message, reaffirmed Bangladesh's unwavering commitment to upholding the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all people around the world as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

‘Awami League government is committed to protect the human rights. We have established National Human Right Commission to protect the people right. And, we have also established independent judiciary,’ she added.

In her message, the BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia expressed her sympathy to the oppressed people of different countries across the globe who lost their basic and human rights.

She alleged that the current government has snatched people's all democratic rights.

‘The democratic rights are supplementary to human rights.’
