9 killed in separate road accidents

Nine people were killed in separate road accidents in five districts in last 24 hours.

In Rajshahi: Three people were killed and another was injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a microbus on Dhaka-Rajshahi highway in Puthia upazila on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Mira Begum, 50, wife of Golam Kibria and her grandson Al-Amin, 25, residents of Balutuli village in Bholahat upazila of Chapainawabganj, and microbus driver Mansur Ali, 32, son of late Mafiz Uddin, a resident of Thakurgaon sadar upazila.

Habibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Puthia Highway Police Camp, said the accident took place on the rain-drenched road at noon, leaving Mira Begum dead on the spot.

The injured were taken to Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital where Al-Amin and Mansur Ali succumbed to their injuries.

In Noakhali: Two motorcyclists were killed and another was injured in a road accident at Chhataipaiya on Sonaimuri-Kankirhat road in Senbagh upazila on Saturday afternoon.

Police said three young men - Parvez, 28, Sujan, 26, and Rasel, 30 - residents of Chashirhat Bijoynagar village in Sonaimuri upazila were returning home from Senbagh, riding on a motorcycle in the afternoon.

When they reached Chhataipaiya, a speedy pickup van drove into their motorbike, leaving Parvez and Sujan dead on the spot and Rasel injured, said officer-in-charge of Senbagh Police Station Harunur Rashid.

The injured was admitted to a local hospital, said the OC, adding that the bodies were sent to Noakhali General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Agitated locals blocked Sonaimuri-Kankirhat road for one hour and vandalised two CNG-run auto-rickshaws following the incident.

Police seized the pickup van, however, its driver managed to flee the spot.

In Panchagarh: A sexagenerian woman was killed in a road accident at Sardarpara village in Boda municipality area on Sunday morning.

Witnesses said the rashly-driven truck hit Fulera Begum, 60, wife of Azizur Rahman Manglu, while she was crossing Boda-Debiganj road, leaving her dead on the spot.

Angry locals caught the truck but driver managed to flee the spot, said AKM Nurul Islam, officer-in-charge of Boda Police Station.

In Tangail: Two people, including a woman, were killed and 12 others injured in a road accident on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Soratoil area in Kalihati upazila on Sunday morning.

The identities of the deceased could not yet be known.

The accident took place around 8:00 am when a Dhaka-bound bus from Rangpur collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction, leaving two dead on the spot and 12 others injured, said Asabur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station.

The injured were taken to Tangail Medical College Hospital.

In Gazipur: An unidentified woman was crushed under the wheels of a train in Chandra area of Kaliakoir upazila on Saturday morning.

The deceased couldn’t be identified immediately.

S M Rakibul Islam, in-charge of Joydevpur Railway Police Outpost, said a train hit the unidentified woman around 6:00 am, leaving her dead on the spot.

Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy.
