Dhaka: A six-month-old child died after falling from the lap of his mother during mugging at Doyaganj in Dhaka in the early hours of Monday.

The infant, Arafat, is the son of Shariatpur’s Shah Alam and Aklima Begum.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp in-charge officer sub-inspector Bacchu Mia quoting the victim’s family said Shah Alam and Aklima Begum reached Dhaka by ferry from Shariatpur. They came to Dhaka for the treatment of their 2-year-old son Al-Amin.

Early on Monday, Shah Alam and his ailing son hired a rickshaw from Shadarghat area for Shishu Hospital, while Aklima Begum rode on another rickshaw with her 6-month-old child for her sister’s residence at Shonir Akhra.

As the rickshaw neared Doyaganj, around four muggers tried to snatch Aklima’s bag, when her son Arafat fell down from her lap. The muggers took away the bag and ran away from the spot.

Local people helped Aklima to take the child to DMCH, where doctors declared him dead, said SI Bacchu Mia.
