Dhaka: Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on Saturday said he does not want to demonstrate any disrespect to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by quitting his post of her special envoy without discussion with her.

‘The Prime Minister has honoured me by making her special envoy. I can’t dishonour her by leaving the post without consultation with her,’ he said.

Speaking at an unscheduled meeting with Jatiya Party leaders and activists at his Banani office, Ershad further said ‘I’ll surely talk to her over the issue. If Jatiya Party is made stronger, the government will be benefited alongside making Parliament more effective.’

He observed that Jatiya Party has revived and party men have become euphoric after having a party co-chairman and a new party secretary general.

‘Now we’ll be able to organise the party in better way,’ he said.

Mentioning that Jatiya Party is the opposition party in Parliament, the former military ruler asked his party lawmakers not to make any statements in Parliament that could create confusion in public mind about the party’s role.

The Jatiya Party chairman said he would strengthen the party before the next parliamentary election.
