Khaleda may surrender to court: lawyer

Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia will surrender voluntarily to the court on Wednesday on condition that she will be allowed to go back to her office and provided with enough security, her lawyer Khandaker Mahbub Hossain has said.
While talking to journalists in his Supreme Court office in Dhaka on Tuesday, Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, also the president of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), said it is impossible for Khaleda Zia to attend the court without adequate security.
Earlier in December, Khaleda Zia’s motorcade came under a bomb attack as she came to appear before the court.
Although there is a warrant for her arrest, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia is unlikely to appear before the court on Wednesday to seek bail in Zia Orphanage and Zia Charitable Trust Fund graft cases.
On 25 February, Special Judge’s Court-3 issued warrant for the arrest of Khaleda Zia and two other accused in the two graft cases, revoking her bail.
Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadar of Special Judge’s Court-3 on the Bakshibazar Alia Madrasah playground also fixed 4 March (Wednesday) for the next hearing on the case.
Another court in Dhaka on Sunday issued a warrant for the search of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan political office in a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act.
However, the law enforcers are yet to take any move either to arrest the BNP chairperson or raid her office.
Meanwhile, Khaleda’s another lawyer Khandaker Mahbub Hossain filed a petition to the High Court for changing the judge of the special court as their client has no confidence in him.
The hearing on the petition is scheduled to be held on 5 March.
BNP sources said Khaleda Zia is unwilling to leave her Gulshan office now as she has information that the government will either arrest her in the two cases or will not allow her entering her office once she leaves it.
