Farabi on 10-day police custody over Avijit Murder

A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent Avijit murder suspect Shafiur Rahman Farabi to police custody for 10 days and allowed the Detective Branch to interrogate him in the custody.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rezaul Karim passed the order after Detective Branch inspector Fazlur Rahman had placed Farabi before the magistrate court and sought the time to question Farabi who had issued repeated death threats to Bangladeshi-born United States citizen writer-blogger Avijit Roy.
Rapid Action Battalion arrested Farabi in the capital’s Jatrabari area on Monday morning. Later, he was handed over to the Detective Branch. RAB claimed that Farabi confessed that he had threatened Avijit with murder.
RAB legal and media wing director Mufti Mahmud Khan said they had obtained a bunch of information, but unable to disclose that for tactical reasons.
Farabi was once held in a case over the murder of blogger Rajib Haider but later was freed on bail.
Farabi’s name again came forward after bloggers Avijit Roy was murdered and his wife Rafida Ahmed Banya was brutally hacked by some unidentified miscreants on 26 February.
