Dhaka: Bangladesh stands on the 89th position in the recently published Global Food Security Index-2017, which is the lowest among the South-Asian countries.

The general secretary of Bangladesh Food Security Network, Nurul Alam Masud, disclosed this at a press briefing in the city’s Dhaka Reporters’ Unity on Saturday morning.

Nurul Alam said though Bangladesh has gained recognition as lower-middle income country in 2015, in case of food security it secured the 89th position, which is the lowest among the South-Asian countries.

The organisation also proposed a six-point recommendations including forming a Food Security Act.

President of Bangladesh Food Security Network Dr Mohammad Joynul Abedin said most of the countries of the world have right to food law but Bangladesh doesn’t have one.

‘Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina earlier in South-Asian Right to Food Conference assured government’s devotion to establish food security in the country. So the government should consider formation of a right to food law on priority basis.’ he said.

Organisation’s vice-president Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, General Secretary of Be Safe Foundation Atiur Rahman Miton, ActionAid assistant director Amit Dey were present in the briefing.
