Habiganj: A former ward councilor was killed in a reported gunfight with police personnel at Magurunda village of Chunarughat upazila in Habigaj early on Monday.

The deceased is Yunus Miah, in his forties, former councilor of ward No. 9 in Chunarughat municipality.

On secret information that a gang of drug traders was trading Yaba, a team of police conducted a drive in the area early in the morning, said Azmiruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Chunarughat Police.

Sensing the presence of police, the drug traders attacked the law enforcers with sharp weapons, forcing them to retaliate that triggered the shootout.

The gun battle left Yunus bullet injured.

Later, the injured was rushed to Chunarughat Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.

Police said that Yunus had long been involved with Yaba trading.

A police member was also injured in the gunfight, said the OC.
