Detective Branch (DB) officials on Tuesday arrested senior correspondent of private television channel Ekushey Television (ETV) Kanak Sarwar from Shahbagh area in Dhaka.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner (media and publication) Masudur Rahman confirmed the arrest saying that Kanak was held at about 2.00pm from the area.

The official also said that the journalist was arrested based on the statement of ETV chairman Abdus Salam in connection with a case filed over pornography control act.

‘Kanak has been shown arrested in the pornography case,’ he says.

On November 26 of last year, a woman filed a case under pornography control act with Cantonment police station. Police later arrested ETC chairman Abdus Salam on that case.

In the case, the woman claimed that the television channel has aired a program centering her falsely.

In the case, the woman mentioned names of four persons: her god brother Johirul Islam, her divorced husband Shah Jalal, Jalal's brother-in-law Jakir Hossain and ETV reporter Mohammad Ilias.

Besides this, a sedition case was filed on January 8 with Tejgaon police station, against ETV chairman Salam and BNP senior vice-chairman Tareq Rahman.

In the first information report, it was mentioned that recently the television channel aired speech of Tarique Rahman that instigated message against the state.
