Non-MPO teachers call off hunger strike on PM’s assurance

The teachers and employees of non-MPO educational institutions, who went on hunger strike for enlistment under the government’s MPO facilities, called off their strike on Friday following assurance of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to take initiative to meet their demand.
Leaders of the demonstrating teachers and employees told UNB over phone that Prime Minister’s personal secretary Sajjadul Hasan and education secretary Sohrab Hossain went to the Jatiya Press Club along with Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzamman Mia around 4:15pm and informed them the PM’s assurance, reports the UNB.
Earlier on Tuesday, the demonstrators ignored Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid’s assurance, and vowed to continue their strike until an assurance is made to meet their demand with a timeframe from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Earlier, they went on hunger strike under the banner of ‘Non-MPO Educational Institution Teachers-Employees Federation’ in front of the Jatiya Press Club on December 26.
Hundreds of teachers and employees from across the country joined the strike.
