Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) realised Tk 1.5 lakh as fines from some 10 to 15 stalls for violating consumer rights during the first five days of Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF) 2018 in the city.

Pranab Kumar Pramanik, assistant director of DNCRP, said they had fined the companies Tk 1.5 lakh following visitors’ complaints, reports the UNB.

However, no written record was found filed with the office about the complaints and fines.

On Friday, DNCRP didn’t receive any complaint from the consumers, said the assistant director.

According to some Facebook posts, they came to know that some food stalls are taking extra money from the consumers, but DNCRP didn’t find any proof in this regard, he added.

On the other hand, Md Anwar Hossain, a salesman of a food stall, said that unlike every year, this year’s management is much better.

‘Our stall is not taking any extra VAT or service charge from the customers. We are selling food following the price list fixed by DITF secretariat,’ he said.

While talking to UNB, Md Imran, a cloth trader from Islampur, said that the quality of could have been better in comparison with its price.

However, several noticeboards with the price list of the DITF secretariat have been hung on different spots of the fair to keep the visitors aware of.

According to the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009, consumers can file case within 30 days of the unfair incident and if the case is proven after investigation, they will get 25 percent of the total amount fined by DNCRP following the complaints.
