BNP senior leader Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan on Tuesday warned that the current government cannot perpetuate its power by resorting to killings, enforced disappearances and other repressive acts.

‘The country now lacks democracy and the rule of law. Those who raise voice against the government are being killed or made disappeared and sent to jail implicating in false cases,’ he said, reports the UNB.

Speaking at a discussion, the BNP leader further said, ‘The government’s time has got shorter, and it won’t be able to prolong its power by indulging in killings, enforced disappearances and making arrest of opposition activists. The regime will be forced to hold a credible election through a movement.’

The inhabitants of Narsingdi living in Dhaka arranged the programme at the Jatiya Press Club demanding the arrest of Swechchhasebak Dal general secretary Abdul Quader Bhuiyan Jewel, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal general secretary Akramul Hasan and some other leaders of the district.

Dr Moyeen, a BNP standing committee member, also said their party under the leadership of Khaleda Zia will return to power through a free and fair election in 2018.

Speaking at the programme, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said the BNP-led 20-party alliance will install a single candidate for the by-polls to Dhaka North City Corporation mayoral post.

He criticised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for what he said making ‘untrue and incident’ remarks about BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Rizvi urged the Prime Minister to refrain from making such comments. ‘No one could stay in power by resorting to falsehood.’

He called upon BNP leaders and activists to get united to ‘restore’ democracy by establishing a pro-people government through a meaningful national election under a non-party neutral administration.
