Payel Killing: HC upholds mother, her lover’s sentence
Dhaka: The High Court on Tuesday upheld the lower court order that sentenced a woman to life imprisonment and her lover to death for killing her son over their extramarital affairs.
An HC bench, comprising Justice Soumendra Sarker and Justice ANM Bashir Ullah, passed the order after hearing the appeal and death reference.
The lifer is Afroza Sultana Nupur while the death-sentenced is Gazi Abdus Salam alias Uzzal.
Deputy attorney general Abdul Mannan Mohan and assistant attorney general Aminur Rahman Tiku represented the state while Saifuddin Mahmud and MM Shahjahan Kabir stood for the petitioner.
According to the prosecution, Sihabur Rahman Payel, son of Bangladeshi expatriate living in Singapore Sohrab Hossain Bhuiyan of Palashpur upazila in Narsingdi district, was found dead on 9 December 2006, two days after he went missing.
Victim’s uncle Mujibur Rahman filed a case with Narsingdi Police Station in this connection.
Later, police submitted chargesheet against Nupur, Uzzal and his friend Harunur Rashid on 9 August 2007 as they found their involvement in the murder.
Nupur, during a confessional statement before a lower court, said she had developed extramarital relations with Uzzal and they decided to marry.
On 6 December 2006, Uzzal’s aide took Payel to him where he strangulated the boy to death.
On 1 September 2009, a Narsingdi court sentenced Nupur to life in prison while Uzzal to death and acquitted Harunur Rashid.
