BNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed on Saturday said Prime Minister’s remark about the election-time government is misleading as there is no provision in the current constitution to form such an administration.

‘The Prime Minister in her address to the nation said an election-time government will be formed. But there’s no provision in the current Constitution for making such a government. She only tried to confuse people with such a comment,’ he said.

Speaking at a discussion, the BNP leader further said, ‘The Prime Minister mainly tried to send out a message that the election will he held under the current partisan government.’

Democratic Movement, a pro-BNP platform, arranged the programme at the Jatiya Press Club, demanding the withdrawal of ‘false’ cases filed against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman.

In her address to the nation on Friday, the Prime Minister said the next general election will be held as per the Constitution, and expressed her high optimism that all the parties registered with the Election Commission will take part in the polls for upholding the country’s democratic process.

‘In line with the constitution, the 11th parliamentary elections will be held towards the end of 2018. How the election will be held is clearly stated in our constitution. An election-time government will be formed under the constitution which will provide all-out cooperation to the Election Commission to conduct the election,’ the PM said.

Moudud, a BNP standing committee member, said the entire nation had an expectation that the Prime Minister would come up with clear directions to hold the next polls in a credible, neutral and expectable manner. ‘But she didn’t do it. The Prime Minister also did not mention anything about the dissolution of parliament before polls and deployment of army during the election.’

He said the Prime Minister could not depict the real scenario of the country in her speech as it was lopsided one.  ‘Her address to the nation could not appease people as she did not talk about genuine problems of the country.’

The BNP leader said the Prime Minister highlighted various development activities carried out by her government, but she did not talk about widespread corruption in all the development projects.
