US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Bernicat on Wednesday said a strong Bangladesh Coast Guard is important for maritime security in the region and beyond.

‘It is not just important for the security of Bangladesh but for all of South Asia and the world,’ she said.

The US Ambassador was addressing at the Bangladesh Coast Guard Boat Maintenance Facility ribbon cutting ceremony in Chittagong as the chief guest, reports the UNB.

During her two-day Chittagong trip, she also visited the Chittagong Port, and met with Chittagong government officials, members of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industries, and members of civil society.

Bernicat said the United States understands that ensuring maritime security works best when done with strong and capable partners.  ‘This is why we are committed to collaborating with the Bangladesh Coast Guard.’

The US Ambassador appreciated accomplishments of the Bangladesh Coast Guard saying those accomplishments have been impressive.

‘For over 20 years the Bangladesh Coast Guard has faithfully served the citizens of Bangladesh by protecting the country’s waters and shorelines,’ she said.

Bernicat hoped that both the United States and Bangladesh will continue to support projects such as this boat maintenance facility to enhance Bangladesh-US collaborative efforts to improve maritime security and the security of the two nations.

Bangladesh Coast Guard Director General Rear Admiral AMMM Aurangzeb Chowdhury and East Zone Commander Captain Wasim Maksud were present.
