A group of Dhaka University (DU) students on Wednesday formed a human chain at the foot of Aparajeyo Bangla on the campus demanding punishment of leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) who, they claimed, have harassed female students during an ongoing movement at DU.

Under the banner of `Anti-harassment student’s movement’ the human chain participants  alleged that at the dictate of BCL central leaders, some leaders and activists of the pro-government student body harassed some female students, who were staging protest against DU’s affiliating seven colleges, reports the UNB.

‘BCL leaders harassed female students in front of the Vice-Chancellor office and the university authority has been totally informed about the incident. Yet, they didn’t take any step for ensuring punishment,’ said a student, Masud al Mahadi.

Masud suggested the people in the DU administration should quit if they fail to deliver justice in the case of female students being harassed on the campus.

‘Though the authorities succeed foiling our movement by harassing and hurting students, they will not be able to stop our protest in future,’ said another student, Saiful Islam Khan.

After the human chain they marched towards the proctor’s office to meet him at around 1 pm. But the gate of the office was locked from inside. Then they chanted slogans for punishing the BCL leaders involved harassing the female students.

At a stage the protesters broke the lock of the gate of the proctor’s office and took position in front of his room.

After sometime Proctor Prof AKM Golam Rabbani came out of his office to assure the protestors that DU will form a probe body to find out the actual incident and make its report published in seven days.

‘The University authority will take necessary steps to ensure punishment to those who are involved harassing the female students,’ he assured them.
