Political scenario to change if BNP hits streets: Moudoud

BNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed on Saturday said the country’s political scenario will change fast if their party takes to the streets as the ruling party cannot tackle them this time.

‘I would like to say the country’s political scenario will change if BNP takes to the streets this time. There’ll be a mass upheaval if we get out on the field and Awami League won’t be able to stay in power,’ he said.

Speaking at a discussion, the BNP leader also urged all to remain alert as the government will try to foil the next polls to hang onto power by force.

Bangladesh Youths Forum arranged the programme at the Jatiya Press Club, marking the 82nd birth anniversary of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman.

Moudud, a BNP standing committee member, said the ruling party has been in a daydream of holding a 2014-like lopsided election by suppressing BNP leaders and activists. ‘But it won’t be possible to do this time.’

He said their party will join the polls, and resist the government’s move to score in an empty field. ‘We’ll wage a movement, if necessary.’

The BNP leader urged his party colleagues to get ready for both the election and a movement.

Criticising the government for what he said its growing repressive acts, the ruling party has been carrying out an election campaign across the country while BNP is not even allowed to indoor programmes.

About the Prime Minister’s recent announcement to form an election-time government, he said it is a new scope for talks on the issue as there is no provision in the constitution for making such a government.

‘As there’s no provision in the constitution to form an election-time government, we think the Prime Minister is now considering a measure beyond the constitution. If this is the case, we’ll welcome her and provide her cooperation to work out steps for holding the next polls in a fair and neutral manner through an understanding,’ Moudud observed.
