Free Rupnagar canal of illegal establishments: HC
Dhaka: The High Court on Sunday ordered the concerned authorities to take necessary steps for removing the illegal establishments on Rupnagar canal in Mirpur area of the city within one month.
The HC bench comprising Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the order after the hearing of the progress report of Dhaka District Administration in this regard.
The HC bench also ordered the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Dhaka Wasa) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) authorities to conduct a joint-survey for determining the boundary of the canal.
Dhaka District Administration submitted a progress report of eviction of the illegal establishments on the canal to the court on November 21 last.
The HC bench also directed the District Administration to submit the progress report within February 25 next.
Deputy Attorney General Taposh Kumar Biswas stood for state while Advocate Md Shahjahan and Advocate AM Masud stood for DNCC and Dhaka Wasa respectively.
According to the report the grabbers grab the canals of the city again and again (repeatedly) after eviction their establishments on the canals.
The district administration recommended the concerned authorities to dig the canals, make walkways and plant trees on the banks of the canals to protect the grabbers.
Earlier last year, the HC ordered the district administration to submit a report of taking necessary steps to evict the illegal establishments and making the canals free from grabbers after two reports in national dailies in this regard.
