President asks police to protect people

Dhaka: President Abdul Hamid on Thursday asked the members of Bangladesh police to give special attention so that none is harassed while discharging their duties, reports local news agency.
‘You (members of police) have to be more dedicated for the welfare of the people. You have to keep in mind that it is the main responsibility of the law enforcement agencies to save public life and property. Special attention has to be given so that none is harassed while discharging your duties,’ he said.
The President said this in his speech to police officials on the occasion of Annual Police Week 2016 at Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban.
Mentioning that people are the source of all power in a democratic system, the President said the country and the government are run by public money.
‘So welfare of the people has to be given priority in all spheres. Every member of the police has to become the friend of the people so that they can take police into their confidence and come for protection,’ he added.
The role of police is very important to maintain country’s internal security as well as establish rule of law, said President Hamid.
‘Every member of the police has to discharge their duties with more firmness to ensure the country’s overall development, security and establish social peace and justice,’ he said.
Mentioning that cooperation and partnership between the police and people are badly needed to ensure law and order in the society, the President underscored the need for working together for further development of law and order.
Terrorism and militancy are not now limited into the single territory and boundary rather it is a global problem, he said adding that there is no alternative to technology-based policing to face technology-based crime.
‘The tactics and success of police in curbing terrorism and militancy have been praised both nationally and internationally. I hope police members will discharge their duties sincerely to establish rule of law and protect constitution and democracy and to resist all anti-state activities in the days to come,’ he added.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, Home Ministry senior secretary Mozammel Haque Khan and IGP AKM Shahidul Hoque, among others, were present on the occasion.
