Chhatra Jote calls countrywide student strike for Jan 29

Pragatisheel Chhatra Jot, an alliance of left-leaning student organisations, on Wednesday called a strike for January 29 in all the educational institutions across the country protesting the attack by leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Dhaka University students.
The decision came from a press conference of the student organisation after a press conference at Madhur Canteen of the university, reports the UNB.
They will stage a solidarity rally at the foot of Raju Sculpture in front of the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) on January 26 and demonstrate across the country on January 28.
Imran Habib Ruman, convener of the left-leaning student alliance, also presented their four-point demand.
The demands include: the arrest of attackers of BCL leader and activists, withdrawal of false cases against the anonymous student, providing the treatment expenses of the injured students and holding the election to Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU).
They also demanded departmental investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, activists of ‘Anti-Harassment Student Forum’ also held a press conference at Madhur Canteen, and demanded action against the attackers.
At least 10 Dhaka University students were hurt in an attack on them allegedly by some leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Tuesday on the campus.
BCL men reportedly assaulted the agitating students who besieged the DU Vice Chancellor for four hours at his office demanding withdrawal of a case the university administration filed recently against some ‘unnamed’ students, removal of Proctor Golam Rabbani, solving the crisis over affiliated colleges and punishing BCL men, allegedly responsible for harassing some female students.
On January 15, some BCL activists foiled a demonstration of the students who were staging a sit-in in front of the VC’s office and assaulted some female students.
