Update: 26 January, 2018, 20:51

Outgoing Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque on Friday expressed his hope that the newly appointed IGP will continue present mass people-oriented policing system.

‘The newly appointed IGP is one of my batchmates. He is well experienced as he has been serving police department for last 32 years. I hope, he will continue present mass-policing system, which we have introduced,’ the IGP said while talking to reporters at the annual sports competition and prize distribution ceremony of Shahid Police Memorial College in Mirpur-14 in the city on Friday, reports the UNB.

The government appointed Dr Javed Patwari, present Additional IGP of Special Branch (SB) as the new IGP on Thursday. He will join as the IGP on January 31 replacing incumbent IGP Shahidul Hoque.

‘We always believe that the police are the friends of the people and last shelter for the victims. We have worked bridging with the people,’ Shahidul Hoque said, adding, ‘We have introduced mass people-oriented accountable community policing system.’

‘I hope this process will continue. Bridges between police and people have already progressed enough through the community policing system. If this system continues, there will be more progress in the days ahead,’ the present Chief of Bangladesh Police hoped.

Asked whether there is any possibility of violence centring Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case, the IGP said, the court will deliver the verdict on the basis of evidence it has. So, whatever the judgment, everyone should accept it, he said.

‘BNP is a responsible party. I believe they will not give any programme which can deteriorate the situation of law and order.’

However, there will be adequate security arrangements from the police. If anybody wants to create violence, the necessary action will be taken, he warned.

Regarding the emergence and controlling of militancy during his tenure, the IGP said the people will evaluate about the curbing of militancy in the country. ‘It’s true that we could not eliminate them (militants) 100 per cent’.

Replying to a question, he said they have done a lot of work to increase police capacity and welfare. But it can’t be fully done in three years. But he is personally satisfied.

‘What I have done is collective efforts; I personally feel I am successful,’ the IGP said.
