Dhaka: Newly appointed Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain started working officially on Sunday morning.

A team of law officials led by Acting registrar of Supreme Court Jakir Hossain accorded reception to the 22nd chief justice of Bangladesh with flower bouquets at about 8:15am.

Earlier, on Saturday, Syed Mahmud Hossain, a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC), took oath as the new Chief Justice (CJ) of the country.

President Abdul Hamid administered the oath to him at Bangabhaban around 7:10pm.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former chief justices, ministers, advisers to the Prime Minister, chief whip, Supreme Court judges, attorney general, senior lawyers, chief election commissioner and chiefs of the three services were, among others, present at the oath-taking ceremony conducted by Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam.

Mahmud Hossain was appointed Chief Justice barely three months after Surendra Kumar Sinha resigned from the post.

Hours after the announcement of the new CJ on Friday, Justice Abdul Wahhab Miah, the senior most judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court who had been carrying out the activities of Chief Justice, quit his post.
